Project “Gutta”
Book
This project, titled Gutta, is a carefully crafted book dedicated to documenting the gutters of New Haven, CT. Each design decision was meticulously made to amplify this focus, with a distinctive binding approach designed to enhance the reader’s experience.
Upon opening Gutta, the reader encounters 16 pages of full-bleed photographs showcasing a series of unique gutters across New Haven. Each page flows seamlessly into the next, forming a continuous visual “gutter” throughout the book. At the end of this sequence, a concealed section is revealed, containing an essay on the history of gutters. The text is laid out in concise, center-aligned spreads, echoing the book’s overarching theme of continuity.
The book’s defining feature is its fold-out mechanism, which allows the entire sequence of images to be unfurled, creating a life-sized, continuous gutter that can be displayed as a vertical collage. This design choice underscores the project’s thematic focus while offering an immersive and dynamic visual experience. To preserve the integrity of the photographs, the first section remains text-free, apart from the title on the spine. Bound in hardcover, each page was photographed, printed, cut, folded, and assembled by hand. The book was printed on a single, high-quality sheet of paper, and only four editions of Gutta were produced.
